Capt Aaron: The material that I have does not show more than one wife for "Capt." Aaron (b1680), but some of the wording in his brief biography may - and I stress "may" - suggest more than one spouse. Also, Capt. Aaron was, apparently, not a Captain in the true sense of the word, having been for the first part of his adult life a carpenter in Woburn. It was only after he moved to East Haddam that he was known by that title; here he was largely involved in land trading (he was a real estate agent? - a "Captain" of industry?).
My info shows that he was born and resided in Woburn, but at times resided in Medford (after 1702), Cambridge (his mother Dorcas, died in his house there in 1714), Charlestown and East Haddam. (From Robert Dunfield)]
Captain Aaron Cleveland lived in Woburn, Charlestown and Medford, Mass. later at East Haddan, Conn. where he bought a tract of 600 acres, in 1738, Housewright.
Capt. Aaron Cleveland lived in Woburn to 1714, Medford to 1710 Charlestown, Mass. to 1713, Cambridge to 1716, Medford again, Charlestown again to 1738 ( or removed, 1738, from Medford to Millington, Middlesex, Connecticut), East Haddam, Middlesex, Connecticut from 1738.
October 7, 1711 he was admitted by profession and baptism, to Cambridge church, Rev. William Brattle, pastor.
April 7,1720, transferred to Medford church.
August 10, 1755, received to communion, East Haddam.
Aaron Cleveland was constable March 1, 1707-08. The officer then was like a magistrate of the present, and conferred usually on the best scholars and first men.
He kept tavern at Cambridge, on the western side of and near Mystic River, and was a builder and contractor.
He paid taxes at Medford 1706'8,'17.
Aaron Cleveland was a large estate owner in Charlestown; his numerous conveyances from 1706 to 1738 may be found in detail in WYMAN'S CHARLESTOWN ESTATES, 220.
At East Haddam Aaron became prominent in the military, and was successivly cornet, Lt. and Capt.; was known as Capt. Cleveland, and so designated on the records.
In person he was of great size and strength. He was of much ability, and became wealthy speculating in land at Charlestown, East Haddam, and Millington, Connecticut.
On East Haddam tax list he is called Aaron Cleveland, Gentleman. and his taxable list given at L3,000.
The funeral of Capt. Aaron Cleveland is thus described by his great grandson, William Cleveland; "My great grandfather lived in Cambridge, in that part called Mystic. He kept a tavern near Mystic River, on the western side. The town is now called Medford. He was a very large man. He died suddenly, probably of apoplexy. As I heard he had eaten heartily of cherries and went to bed early, and when his wife followed him she found him dead. The stair case being narrow and winding, the corpse could not be taken down that way, and the windows were so small that they were obliged to enlarge one of them to get egress for the coffin, which was lowered into the yard the evening previous to the funeral. Six men attempted to carry the coffin to the grave, but it proved to heavy, and a carriage was procured after they had carried it part of the way.
